Artificial intelligence (AI) is not just an innovative tool; it’s a revolutionary force that promises to redefine the very fabric of safety, efficiency, and operational dynamics (Security Industry Association, 2021). As we dig into the transformative influence of AI, it becomes evident that while the industry celebrates its strides towards integrating cutting-edge technology, a stark contrast emerges between potential capabilities and current applications. This divergence between what the industry could achieve with AI and what it’s currently doing underscores a provocative narrative of untapped opportunities and the urgent need for a fundemental change in approach.

The current state of AI in physical security, particularly in retail, reflects a reactive posture. Many establishments still rely on traditional security measures enhanced by AI analytics and integrations, such as video surveillance, access control, and cloud management (Raj, 2023)​​. These technologies, while advanced, often operate in silos, lacking the seamless integration required to preemptively address security threats.
