BEDFORD – Bedford Police arrested a man on Thursday, March 27, after responding to an incident at the Goodwill store on James Avenue.
Shadd Graves, 53, of Bedford, is facing charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, possession of meth and drug paraphernalia.
According to an affidavit for probable cause filed by Bedford Police Officer Bryce Bower, officers responded to a report of a male driving a navy blue Chevrolet Blazer that had jumped a curb at the Goodwill parking lot. Upon arrival, officers found Graves walking from the vehicle towards the store.
During questioning, Graves stated that his brakes had failed, causing him to drive over the curb. Officers noted that Graves exhibited signs of impairment, including erratic movements, incoherent speech, and glassy eyes. Graves consented to a search of his person, during which officers located a glass vial containing a crystal-like substance, which field-tested positive for methamphetamine. A subsequent search of Graves’ shoe revealed another bag containing methamphetamine.
After being read his Miranda Rights, Graves admitted to driving the Blazer to Goodwill. He stated he had not used methamphetamine in three weeks before heart surgery.
A K-9 unit conducted a free air sniff of the Blazer, and the K-9 alerted to narcotics on the front passenger door. A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a cut straw containing methamphetamine.
Due to Graves’ apparent state of intoxication, officers did not administer Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. However, Graves consented to a blood draw conducted at IU Health Bedford Hospital.
Graves was transported to the Bedford Police Department for processing and lodged at the Lawrence County Jail.
Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
