Five people were arrested — in three separate incidents — during a three-hour span at the same Safeway store in Montgomery County, police say.

The thefts happened back-to-back-to-back on the afternoon of Thursday, March 20 at the Safeway in the 5000 block of Bradley Boulevard.

The first arrest came around 12:30 p.m., when a man and woman were spotted stealing from the store, according to Montgomery County Police.

Officers first apprehended 34-year-old Shelon Emmanel Johnson, and it was determined that he had two active arrest warrants for theft and violation of probation for drug possession

The woman allegedly conspired to steal the items with Johnson, investigators said, and detectives confirmed that she had also provided a false name and identified her as Dequita LaShawn Jones of Gaithersburg.

Both were taken to the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit, where Johnson was charged with:

  • Theft of $100 to under $1,500;
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia;
  • False statement to peace officer;
  • Obstructing and hindering.

Jones was charged with conspiracy to commit theft $100 to under $1,500 and released.

Barely 90 minutes later, police say 31-year-old Daniel Mossing Troen of Kensington pulled the same move.

He walked into the store around 2 p.m., stole property, and left. Officers caught up with him and issued a criminal citation for theft and a trespass notice before he was released.

Then at 2:55 p.m., two more suspects — 39-year-old James Baker and 19-year-old Kristchelle Aniya Wedge, both from Washington, DC — allegedly made a grab-and-go before being stopped at the Bethesda Metro Station.

Police say they were carrying stolen Safeway goods. Both were charged with theft and released on scene.

In total, five people were arrested in less than three hours — all from the same store.

Police say the retail blitz is part of an ongoing initiative to crack down on theft and repeat offenders.
