Kroger apologizes to shopper who ‘felt like a thief’ after paying for items – anti-crime tech kicked in before he left

AN UPSET Kroger shopper has slammed the retailer after the wheels on their cart locked despite having a receipt to hand.

The customer expressed their frustration in a post on X, explaining that the experience made them feel like a criminal.

“@kroger thanks for making me feel like a thief today,” said John Cougar.

“Went through self-checkout buying 3 six packs of soda. Went past clerk with receipt on hand and once I crossed the threshold the wheels locked up on cart.

“I thought there was a rock. But no your high tech cart thought I was stealing,” he fumed.

Kroger responded to Cougar’s complaint on X, asking for the address of the store where the incident occurred.

“Oh no! We are sorry to hear that, John. We will go ahead and have this escalated to the store for them to check.”

“Rest assured that this will be addressed,” the Kroger team added.

But Cougar is not the only customer who has been taken by surprise by their cart randomly locking.

“My wheels locked up in the entryway and some random guy walked up to me afterward and asked to see my receipt,” another shopper said.

“At first, I thought the cart just had a malfunction, but once I realized they did it on purpose I was pissed!”

“I have half a mind not to go there again. I have other options nearby,” they added.

Kroger shoppers have repeatedly shared their concerns about this issue on social media.

“Gotta love when you pay for your groceries and go to push the cart out and the wheels lock up on you… as if you didn’t pay for something so the device on the cart locks the wheels lol,” a customer wrote on X.

“I was like I paid for it all,” they exclaimed.

And this is just one of a handful of unpopular anti-theft measures retailers across the US have introduced.

Walmart and Loblaw shoppers have also faced wheel locking issues, and they are not impressed.

“Why did Walmart lock those carts to come to an abrupt stop in the parking lots?” a shopper wrote on Facebook.

“It took me all my strength to push the cart.”

“Stupidest idea they ever had,” they declared.

Anti-theft measures rolled out by retailers

Retailers across the US and Canada have rolled out strategies designed to combat theft. The U.S. Sun has compiled a list of measures that have been implemented at stores.

  • Locking items in cabinets.
  • Security pegs.
  • Security cameras.
  • Signs warning about the impact of theft.
  • Receipt scanners.
  • Receipt checks.
  • Carts with locking technology

Customers at LobLaw have also complained about this cart locking system.

“I was leaving the store and my cart locked up and alarms started blaring. Thanks for making me feel like a thief!” one shopper said.

Other anti-theft measures include receipt checks and locking goods in glass cabinets to prevent shoplifting.

Shoppers appear to be tiring of these checks.

“I throw it [the receipt] at em,” one customer wrote.

Customers are also becoming increasingly annoyed at retailer’s policies of keeping certain goods behind glass-locked doors.

Even everyday essentials like socks and deodorant are now being kept behind lock and key.

“You have to page an employee to open them to buy shaving cream, deodorant, underwear and socks,” one shocked shopper said on Facebook.
