Michaels celebrated its official opening on Saturday, April 12, at the Yorktown Green shopping center, moving into the former Kmart building at 335 Downing Dr. in Yorktown Heights.

The store features a custom framing department, and will soon add a balloon bar and fabric section later this year.

The grand opening marks another milestone in the ongoing revitalization of the shopping center, which is fast becoming a go-to retail destination in Yorktown, according to town officials.

Michaels joins a string of other recently opened retailers at the site, including Five Below, which debuted in February, and T.J. Maxx, which opened its doors in November. A pickleball sports center is also slated to open in the same building by late August or early fall.

“We are taking blight and making it bright in Yorktown. We’re getting all our commercial spaces filled,” said Yorktown Supervisor Ed Lachterman at the store’s ribbon-cutting ceremony.

The shopping center’s transformation began in 2022 when Uncle Giuseppe’s Marketplace opened in a space that had previously sat empty for a decade, officials said.

Michaels, founded in 1973 and based in Irving, Texas, now operates over 1,300 stores across 49 U.S. states and Canada.
